It opened in 1860 as the 5th General Hospital. It was initially known as Kandang Kerbau Hospital by the Malay locals due to its proximity to a bull pen. The hospital was used as a center for smallpox vaccinations and offered bamboo planks for maternity beds. The maternity hospital opened on 1 October 1924, and on the first day, 11 babies were delivered. By 1966, it was one of the largest maternity hospitals in the world, delivering an average of 3,856 babies per month. It was renamed as KK Women's and Children's Hospital in 1997.
